SDLP Councillor Shauna Cusack has called on the Council’s cleansing department to take more proactive steps to combat graffiti particularly in the City Centre.
Said Cllr Cusack: “Last November, I proposed a motion to Council which essentially asked that officials take proactive steps in dealing with unsightly and unwanted graffiti in our City and District and to create a system to either remove or replace it with urban art.
“In a follow up meeting I explained to stakeholders that Council should be the first point of contact with regards to public reporting and facilitating the eradication of this widespread issue and promoting creative projects to prevent unsightly graffiti reoccurring.
“I highlighted the current state of the graffiti ridden buildings surrounding Council owned Victoria Market car park, one of the most central locations for visitors, tourists and the public as a priority case for action.
“It’s disappointing to see that this area is as bad as ever and I believe this gives a very poor impression of our City.
“I have asked once again that this area be dealt with and had been assured that any graffiti on council owned property can be reported directly to the Strand Road switchboard while a system is being developed on the wider issue.
“We have a simply stunning City and District and so much to be proud of.
“I cannot understand why elements exist who wish to degrade our beautiful communities and built heritage with graffiti, dumping and vandalism to akin them to slums.
“While Council does have a very important and proactive role to play so does changing mindset of some of the public who have total disdain for our environment and I will continue to work on this,” she added.
