BOMB squad officers and a robot have carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect device found at a house in Derry this afternoon.
Police cordoned off the area after a suspicious object was found in the Fern Park area of Galliagh.
As a result, senior police commanders tasked British Army Technical Officers to the scene to examine the object.
Up to 30 homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.
The local council opened up the Shantallow Community Centre was opened up for residents who had to leave their homes and had nowhere else to go.
The ATO sent in a robot to examine the object and shortly before 5 pm a controlled explosion was carried out.
A police cordon remains in place around Fern Park as the security operation continues.
SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney said: “Once again people in the Galliagh area are facing significant disruption as police deal with a suspicious device in the Fern Park area.”
