ARCHIBALD – NATIONAL FLAG SHOULD BE TREATED WITH RESPECT

Caoimhe-Archibald1SINN Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has spoken out against the burning of flags on a bonfire in Limavady and claims about the erection of increased numbers of tricolours in the area.

The East Derry MLA said: “Our national flag belongs to us all and is a symbol of peace and unity between the Green and Orange traditions.

“It should be treated with respect and should not be used to mark territory or to antagonise anyone.

“Likewise the burning of flags or emblems is wrong.

“This is a mirror image of the behaviour associated with the very worst nakedly sectarian displays associated with some loyalist bonfires.

“We need to move away from sectarian displays and into a future where all cultural identities are treated with respect,” she added.
