guildhallTHE Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Alderman Hilary McClintock, is encouraging fans of popular classical music to book their places for a free concert being staged in the Guildhall next week by an acclaimed 43-piece orchestra from the United States.

The event is being held in support of the Mayor’s chosen charities for the year Action Cancer NI and Tearfund. Ald.

McClintock said concert-goers are in for a real treat when Midwest Young Artists Conservatory (MYAC) and Irish tenor Paul Byrom, star of the US hit show Celtic Thunder and son-in-law of famous Derry composer Phil Coulter, present The Great American Songbook in the Guildhall on Wednesday, June 22nd, at 7.30pm.

Admission is free, but donations in support of the Mayor’s charities will be gratefully received during the evening.

Encouraging locals and visitors to come along and enjoy MYAC Perform America International in support of the Mayor’s charities,

Ald. McClintock said the Guildhall was a magnificent venue to showcase the musical ensemble directed by Chicago-based Allan Dennis, who are visiting Derry as part of their current tour of Ireland and Scotland.

She said: “I am really delighted to be welcoming Midwest Young Artists to our wonderful city for their concert in support of my two chosen charities, Action Cancer NI and Tearfund, the Christian relief and development agency.

“This promises to be a fabulous ‘feel good’ evening of timeless American classics and show songs showcasing the best songs from Broadway musicals, Hollywood films and theatre stages.”

Looking forward to Wednesday’s concert in the Guildhall, Allan Dennis, the orchestra’s conductor said:

“The opportunity for our orchestra to perform in such historic and beautiful venues in both Ireland and Scotland is very exciting. We’ve received such a warm welcome and are looking forward to each event.

“As well as performing in the Guildhall’s magnificent Main Hall, we will be lucky to have some time in Derry to enjoy the city which is something the group are very much looking forward to.”

Irish tenor and Celtic Thunder star Paul Byrom is also delighted to be performing in concert in Derry for the first time.

“After years of performing around Ireland, America and Canada, I’m delighted to be finally coming to sing in the town my Father-in-Law loves so well! He has always told me how welcoming the people of Derry are, and I look forward to spending some time there as well as performing.”

MYAC have performed at a number of prestigious venues across Ireland and Scotland over the past week prior to their arrival in Derry, including Christ Church in Dublin.

As a high demand for audience places is anticipated, those wishing to attend the concert on Wednesday, June 22nd at 7.30pm, are advised to RSVP as soon as possible by email to [email protected].
