THERE is growing anger amongst residents and motorists in Derry – over the state of our roads at the weekend.
It follows a series of accidents in the city – and in the county – in the past 48 hours.
Ambulance crews and PSNI attended the scene of a crash involving a bus on the Culmore Road in Derry after 9pm.
Eye-witnesses said the roads around the city were ‘glistening’ with ice. Gritting lorries have been deployed in the North West – according to Transport NI.
However conditions are now treacherous in many areas of the city in particular.
Readers report icy and dangerous road conditions on the Culmore Road, Creggan, Shantallow, Ballymagroarty, the Old Letterkenny Road, Bligh’s Lane and Gobnascale.
Pedestrians are being warned that some footpaths are in a very dangerous condition.
The main Derry to Belfast road has been gritted but motorists should still drive with care especially over Glenshane.
Roads are also dangerous on side roads around Greysteel, Park, Eglinton, Claudy, Limavady, Maghera and Dungiven.
Freezing fog patches are also affecting driving conditions in some areas of county Derry.
A new warning for snow has been issued from 4pm today (Monday) with up to 10cms on higher ground and 2cm-5cm on lower levels.
The alert is in place until noon on Tuesday.
Charities and community workers are urging people to check on vulnerable and elderly neighbours.
“The public should be aware of the risk of difficult driving conditions and some travel disruption,” said a Met Office spokesman.
