DERRY CITY FANS FURIOUS FOLLOWING BARRY MOLLOY’S DEPARATURE

Derry City fans have expressed their anger on social media platforms following the decision to allow club captain Barry Molloy to join Crusaders.

Some Derry City fans have expressed their annoyance at the handling of Barry Molloy's departure from the club.

Some Derry City fans have expressed their annoyance at the handling of Barry Molloy’s departure from the club.

It was announced earlier this week that long-serving stalwart had agreed terms with Stephen Baxter’s high-flying Crusaders side who are challenging for the Irish League title.

That prompted an angry response from some sections of the Derry City support, who feel the club didn’t do enough to keep Molloy at The Brandywell.

Molloy himself said earlier this week that he never envisaged a move away from Derry City.

Molloy who has played for his hometown club for the past ten seasons believed he’d end his career there.

However, contract negotiations with Derry stalled, and that left Molloy with no other alternative but to join Crusaders.

It’s believed Molloy was only offered a fraction of what he earned last season and that offer pushed him towards the exit door.

However, some Derry City fans are angered at what they’ve described as the shabby treatment of a great servant.

One fan posted on their timeline, “Think it’s awful that Barry Molloy has left the club. What a great player he was.

“Sad to read him say that he never thought he’d play for anyone else, but it seems he had no other option. Deserved better. All the best Barry and thanks for the memories.

Another said, “Absolute disgrace what’s happened with Molloy. Great player, still only 31 and vastly experienced.

“His experience would be a massive help to the younger players in the squad. Terrible decision to let him go.

“I know he got a good deal financially from Crusaders, but he would never have left if Derry had offered a half decent contract. Disgrace. All the best Barry.
