A family have been forced to flee their home as a result anti-social behaviour in the Shantallow area of Derry, SDLP Cllr Brian Tierney has revealed
Cllr Tierney was speaking after a car was set on fire on Racecourse Road last night- only yards from where another vehicle was torched at the weekend.
Cllr Tierney said he was helping to re-house the family who have been intimidated after their was taken from outside their Greenhaw Crescent home and set on fire.
Up to 60 young people were involved in the incident.
Cllr Tierney said: “It is three nights in a row of this high level anti-social behaviour and reckless vandalism in the area, and it seems to be spreading across the Shantallow estate. It is total madness, and people are very worried about the situation and very frightened about what is happening,” said Cllr Tierney.
“I spoke with police yesterday and they assured me they will step up patrols in the estate, however, here we are again waking up to the mess from another night of anti- social behaviour.
“I would urgently appeal to parents if they have any inkling at all that their children are involved in this madness that they should do the right thing.
“I will also be speaking with police again to see what measures they will be taking.
“It is not acceptable that some people feel afraid in their homes. This anti-social behaviour has to stop.”
Cllr Tierney concluded: “This is not the image of Shantallow that most people know and are proud of.”
