The hijacked Asda delivery van abandoned on Northland Road

SDLP Foyle MLA has condemned the third security alert in Derry as “disgraceful’ after a van was hijacked this evening.

Police have evacuated homes after an Asda delivery van was abandoned along Northland Road at its junction with Glen Road near St Mary’s School.

As a result, police have asked motorists to avoid the area.

Residents have been moved from their homes and police say Glen Development Initiative has been opened as a rest centre.

In a further incident, police say there has been another attempted hijacking this evening, this time on a buss at Moss Road.

Mr Durkan tweeted on Monday night: “Another blow against the Empire..the third security alert of the day.

“This one on Northland Road will result in many elderly people having to leave their homes on an absolutely freezing night. Disgraceful.”

PSNI Foyle said on Monday night: “We appreciate there is a lot happening in the city tonight folks.

“It’s important we have the right information out there.

“We can confirm there has been an attempted hijacking of a local bus service in the area of Moss Road.

“We are responding to these incidents with public safety remaining our top priority.”

Police are continuing to deal with two hijackings of vans earlier today in Creggan.

In Southway, the cordon has been reduced and residents have been allowed to return home by foot.
