AS part of the celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2018 #GEW2018, Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Business team is encouraging social enterprises, social entrepreneurs and those working within the third sector to attend an information session to find out details of the Techies in Residence call for applications.
The event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 13 November, at the Holywell Diverse City Partnership, 10-14 Bishop St Derry, from 12.30pm to 2pm (light lunch provided)
Techies in Residence, a Digital Social Innovation Challenge, now in its fourth year, is funded by Comic Relief and the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland and managed by Innovate-NI.
Encouraging organisations to take part, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr John Boyle said the event is aimed at encouraging businesses to use technology to enhance their work and to avail of the support available to help sustain their ideas for growth.
Clare Magee, Innovate NI explained that the Techies in Residence programme supports voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations in Northern Ireland to creatively use digital technology to enhance their social impact.
She explained: “It pairs VCSE organisations with a ‘Techie’ a digital technology professional to collaboratively develop a new prototype digital product – a tool, app, platform – over a 10-12 week period.
“Expert support and mentoring is also provided by Innovate-NI who handhold each project through the process and also support projects to access additional support to plan for the growth and sustainability of their idea in future.”
She also encouraged social entrepreneurs to take part by registering their attendance in advance via the following link – https://getinvited.to/techinres/techies-in-residence-info-session-derry-strabane-district-council/
She added that the first stage applications close at 5pm on Friday 7th December 2018 and that the information event next week is a great opportunity to find out more about the project and how to get involved.

This event is one of a series of events organised by the Council to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week (12-16 November).
Other events taking place include a Social Enterprise £1k Pitching competition that encourages groups and social entrepreneurs to apply for a Social Enterprise Pitching Competition that will assist them in delivering project ideas with the chance of getting shortlisted to pitch for a £1,000 prize package.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr John Boyle says Council’s participation in Global Entrepreneurship Week is a great opportunity to introduce new opportunities for businesses and to encourage potential business start-ups to launch their own ventures and avail of the advice and support that is available.
He said: “During one week each November nearly 10m people in 170 countries celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week through thousands of events, activities and competitions – it’s a chance for them to unleash their ideas and make it possible for anyone, anywhere to start and scale a business and we are delighted to be part of it.”
