AN animal rescue centre in Derry has had to shut its doors over the outbreak of the parvovirus.
As as a result two dogs are currently seriously ill with the viral disease.
Pet FBI has announced the news of a week-long closure for precautionary reasons on its Facebook page.
It says in a statement: ”
“Guys we are devastated to have to close the centre to the public for the next week at least but we have to take maximum precautions for the time being.
“We took in Buster last week, a stray that wasn’t claimed and unknown to us at the time, he was carrying parvovirus.
“The incubation period is quite long and only last night did he start showing symptoms.
“It has spread rapidly and he and already one other are seriously ill.
“They are in isolation and on drips with our vets at St Elmo but due to the nature of the virus we have to expect that all dogs are likely to be symptomatic as well.
“We cannot let any dogs in or out for the time being obviously and we are praying that the ones we have are going to pull through this.
“We have every faith in our veterinary team and they are doing all they can. Any donation, no matter how small will be a lifeline for us at the minute.
“Our bills are already huge and this is quite honestly a disaster for us and one that we can ill afford but we have to try everything to save these pups.
“None were vaccinated before they came to us and this is the result.
“We are very conscious of infection control but unfortunately an already sick dog came in and despite rigorous disinfection procedures, it has spread to our other dogs.
“Please help us towards the cost of this, we are completely reliant on public donations and have no other means to pay our vet bills.
“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
