SINN Féin Environment Spokesperson Sandra Duffy has welcomed the publication of new data revealing that low carbon and renewable energy production is out performing fossil fuel production for the first time.
The Derry councillor said: “I welcome the publication of the data collected by Dr Iain Staffell, it shows that positive steps are being taken to move towards a low carbon and ultimately a carbon free society.
“However, we cannot rest on the positives of the data, but ask what more can be done to ensure that we meet our European Renewable Energy Targets and commitments under the Paris Agreements.
“Renewable energy production from wind is continuing to grow and outperform the production capabilities of fossil fuels such as coal.
“It is therefore essential that there is a continued effort to develop and expand our renewable energy portfolio to further decrease our reliance on coal.”
