A delegation of US investors visited Derry this week to explore trade and investment opportunities in the Council area.
The Irish International Business Network (IIBN) recently met local business people from the City and District last Wednesday following extensive international engagement by Council’s Business and Investment team.
The delegation attended a number of networking events throughout the day as well as viewing the University of Ulster’s data analytics research centre at Magee and taking in the City’s cultural offering.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, hosted a round table meeting for the delegation with the Unity of Purpose Group at the Guildhall on Wednesday morning and he said he was pleased to welcome such an influential group to the City and District.
“I am delighted that we hosted this high level delegation from the Irish International Business Network in our Council area,” he said.
“It offered a valuable opportunity for local business people to make new international connections with key decision makers while also giving us the chance to showcase the cultural and tourism offering of the City and District and the wider North West region to an influential audience.
“Over the last 10 years the Business Network have mentored hundreds of the next generation of Irish entrepreneurs and I was particularly pleased that local young leaders from the Amazing the Space project had the opportunity to meet the delegation.”
The eight member IIBN delegation was led by Irish American New York resident Sean Gaffey who is the First Vice President and Senior Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.
Among the events on their itinerary was a presentation on Derry and Strabane’s Investment Proposition, a series of networking events with both established companies and the best of our thriving tech start up scene.
Council’s Head of Business, Kevin O’Connor commented, “International engagement, attracting foreign direct investment and opening up export opportunities are at the heart of Councils ambitious economic development strategy. Our ultimate goal is to help create the right environment for business to flourish, grow and great local jobs.
“This week’s investment is one element of this strategy”.
