EAMONN McCann will not be running for People Before Profit in the forthcoming General Election in the Foyle constituency.
Instead, the Derry branch of the party has selected local activist Shaun Harkin to contest the seat on Thursday, June 8, currently held by SDLP MP Mark Durkan.
Mr Harkin said: “I am delighted to have been unanimously selected by the Derry PBP branch to stand in this year’s Westminster election. I am also honoured to have the backing of Eamonn McCann, and look forward to working with him and everyone else in PBP to provide a radical alternative in this election.
“While the failed establishment parties of Nationalism and Unionism squabble amongst themselves and with each other we will be putting forward our case for a Socialist Ireland.”
He will be campaigning against Tory Welfare Reforms which are hitting the poorest in society across Derry.
These heartless policies are putting children in poverty and punishing the poor and vulnerable,” said Mr Harkin.
“It’s infuriating that Stormont has allowed the Tories to introduce it here.
“The consequence is already clear with spreading food banks. Our people are being forced to go to charities to feed their families.
“Welfare reform and so-called Steps to Success are designed to humiliate working class people. The tipping point is here.
“We need a rising against poverty and inequality.
