THE BUS Eireann strike which has been affecting people travelling from Derry to Dublin is now over.
Staff will return to work ahead of a ballot on the Labour Court’s recommendation, the National Bus & Rail Union General Secretary says.
The announcement came just minutes after Dublin Bus drivers voted to go on strike.
The strike at Bus Eireann started three weeks ago, and the company said the dispute was losing them as much as €500,000 a day.
NBRU general secretary Dermot O’Leary said in a statement this afternoon: “Our members will now return to work after 21 days on strike.
“They have shown tremendous dignity throughout what has been an extremely difficult dispute, for that they are to be commended.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank members of the travelling public for their massive support and understanding through what has been a difficult time for them in having to make alternative travel arrangements for their daily commute.”
It was hoped on Monday that buses would be back on the road by Tuesday as talks on the dispute continued at the Workplace Relations Commission.
