SDLP Foyle representatives have expressed their concern after it was announced that Derry based aerospace firm Schivo has gone into administration.
SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan said: “This development will understandably cause serious concern among the 83 workers and their families.
“For Derry, news of another economic blow and yet more job losses is seriously demoralising.
“This announcement is particularly difficult as these are skilled jobs which are not easily replaced if indeed they are lost.
“With their local office number out of service I have contacted their head office in Waterford to make representations on behalf of anxious staff and I am awaiting their response.
“I would also encourage the Economy Minister, as a matter of urgency, to pledge his support for staff in the weeks and months ahead.
“They must not become the latest casualties of the Executive’s economic strategy that seems to be benefitting only certain areas of Belfast.”
SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan said, “Employees at Schivo NI, formerly Maydown Precision Engineering, have been a committed and reliable workforce – some of whom have served their employers loyally and faithfully for decades.
“This sad decision is not a reflection on their talent or commitment but of wider sectoral challenges.
“As those employees now face the prospect of terrible uncertainty after the appointment of administrators, the company have an onus to reciprocate the loyalty and good faith which the workers have always shown, and the administrators must seek to optimise their prospects in this stressful context.”
