DERRY City and Strabane District Council’s ‘Light up your Christmas’ programme continues this Thursday, December 1s as Santa Claus comes to Newtownstewart to perform the town’s big switch on.
A children’s party, live music and walkabout street characters are part of the entertainment on offer while local shops will open late and offer special Christmas promotions.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, encouraged local people to come out and enjoy what should be “a great evening for all the family.”
“We are delighted that Santa Claus will return to the district later this week after already taking time out of his busy schedule to visit Strabane and Castlederg recently,” she said.
“Newtownstewart will be a hive of activity with children’s entertainment, live music and a chance to do some late night Christmas shopping so it promises to be a great evening for all the family.
“The in-store promotions and special offers in the town’s shops are a great way to encourage the public to support local businesses this Christmas and the Best Dressed Window Competition means they will be making that extra effort to get into the festive spirit.”
Thursday’s programme of events begins with a Children’s Party at 4pm at the Newtownstewart Centre 2000 before Santa arrives by Fire Engine to perform the switch on at 5.30pm.
Riff Raff will provide the music in the Marquee from 6pm until 9pm and Children will get the opportunity to meet and have photographs taken with the animated Walkabout Street Characters.
Local businesses will compete for plaques for first and second place in the Best Dressed Window Competition.
Santa will be back again for the Sion Mills Lights Switch On on December 6th where school choirs will add to the atmosphere with carol singing.
