RYANAIR’S long term commitment to the City of Derry aiport appear in doubt this evening.
Plans by the Irish firm to move growth away from UK airports in the wake of the vote to leave the EU could have an impact on Derry.
The airline has been operating from the City of Derry airport since 1999.
From March this year it opened a new base at Belfast International, operating flights to London Gatwick.
By autumn 2016, Ryanair will be running 11 flight routes from Aldergrove.
But in a financial statement today the low-cost carrier has warned that because of the EU referendum vote, it may pivot its growth away from UK airports.
A spokesperson for the City of Derry airport said they would continue to liaise directly with Ryanair, who are expected to run nine weekly services to London Stansted during the 2016 winter schedule.
But what happens after the UK exit from the EU, possibly in 2017, leaves a cloud over Ryanair’s long term commitment to the City of Derry airport.
