THE wait is over and the 2016 Foyle Cup youth football tournament kicks off today.
The annual event is expected to attract 73,000 visitors to the North West, bringing an estimated £1.75 million into the local economy.
Organisers are expecting 2,000 players from 310 teams to compete,
Over the next six days, games will be played at venues in the city and on both sides of the border.
Scouts from English Premiership clubs Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Sunderland as well as Scotland’s Rangers and Hearts will be on the lookout for the talented young players for the future.
Among today’s household names who have played in the tournament have been David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Robbie Keane, John O’Shea, Darron Gibson, Shay Given, Paddy McCourt, Kevin Kilbane and James McClean.
One of the highlights of the week is the opening parade which will take place through the city centre ahead of opening ceremony in Guildhall Square.
