POLICE closed Derry’s Culmore Road to traffic from 9 pm for several hours last night, Sunday, April 3 for a reconstruction of a fatal road traffic collision.
The crash happened on Sunday, February 21, which claimed the life of Brendan O’Connor.
Mr O’Connor, who was a former Chair of the SDLP’s District Executive in the city, was out walking when he was hit by an alleged drink driver.
The 70-year-old produced most of the campaign material for John Hume in both Westminster and European elections.
Local diversions were put be in place last night evening and motorists were advised to seek an alternative route.
The PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit has renewed its appeal for witnesses to the collision, in which Mr O’Connor was knocked down and killed.
Constable Paula Hanna said: “We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have been in the vicinity of the Culmore Road at around 6.45pm and observed anything that could assist with our investigation to contact police on 101.”
A 43-year-old man was arrested at the time and questioned on suspicion of causing death by driving carelessly while unfit.
He was later released on bail pending further inquiries.
