SINN Fein chief Martin McGuinness will tonight be ratified as a Sinn Fein Foyle candidate in the May Assembly elections.
The deputy First Minister will have his candidacy endorsed by party members at a selection convention to be held in the Maldron Hotel on Butcher Street.
Mr McGuinness has ditched standing in Mid-Ulster where he was first elected 19 years ago.
He is now turning his attentions to Foyle in the hope he can snatch a seat off the SDLP.
The SDLP has three sitting MLAs – party leader Colum Eastwood, Mark H Durkan and Gerry Diver – and the party is confident of winning all three seats
This will be Gerry Diver’s first time standing for election as an MLA after he replaced Pat Ramsey who retired on December 31, 2015, on health grounds.
Sinn Fein have two MLAs – Raymond McCartney and Maeve McLaughlin.
Party strategists want to secure three seats in Foyle and a further three Dail seats in Donegal in this Friday’s General Election in the Republic.
