THE wait is finally over for local LEGO fans with the announcement of the winners of the Brick Wonders competition, which attracted entries from up and down the country.
The winning pieces will now go display as part of a special Brick Wonders LEGO Trail exhibited at a number of locations throughout the city.
The competition was organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council as part of the ongoing Brick Wonders Exhibition which has taken over the Nerve Centre until May 2nd, featuring over 70 LEGO creations by Warren Elsmore.
Among the intricate constructions are the Great Wall of China, Niagara Falls and a range of modern and historic exhibits.
But giving Warren a run for his money are the 12 local LEGO designers and design teams, who have created a series of impressive pieces with a more local feel.
Congratulating the winners, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion said: “I am so impressed by the standard of the entries, the pieces are extremely creative and really capture some of our most recognisable buildings and landmarks.
“The time involved in building such intricate designs makes it a real challenge so I would like to acknowledge the patience and dedication of all those who entered.
“I can’t wait to see the pieces go on display.”
Legacy Director with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Oonagh McGillion, said: “It was great to see that the competition captured the imaginations of children right across the country.
“The idea behind the competition was to get people thinking about their own towns and cities and how they would go about creating a LEGO piece that really captures their area.
“The competition winners all excelled in coming up with unique and interesting designs which will now form a fascinating exhibition all of their own. Well done to all the entrants.”
Among the winning entries were a model of Altnagelvin, featuring the Mayor herself, a model of Lisahally Port and the Alley Theatre’s Ambrose the Pig.
Details of the trail will be announced in the coming days.
