THE Western Trust in partnership with the British Lung Foundation (BLF) has launched the first Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis support group in the North of Ireland at an event in Derry’s City Hotel.
Western Trust Chief Executive Elaine Way said: “We are delighted to work in partnership with the British Lung Foundation to launch this new support group for patients in the Western Trust area.
“The North West IPF Support Group, strongly supported by members of the Western Trust’s Respiratory Team, is another example of how collaboration can improve care for our patients and their families.”
Nessie Blair, Service Development Manager for British Lung Foundation in the North of Ireland said: “This introduction of a support group is much needed service for patients with this illness and their carers.
“We at the British Lung Foundation are very encouraged by the motivation and support of the IPF patients and carers who are leading the way in setting up the North West IPF Support Group.”
She also spoke about the impact the disease has on those who live with it.
She advised: “IPF isn’t well known, but it has a huge impact in the North of Ireland.
Around 100 people will be diagnosed with the condition in the province this year.
There is currently no cure for this condition, and few treatments are available to slow it down.
The British Lung Foundation will continue to play a key role in improving the lives of people with this IPF by funding research, raising awareness among doctors and nurses, and helping to support people who have been diagnosed.
Sonya McKee said: “I am passionate about setting up this IPF Support group because of our experiences as a family. When my father was told he had IPF, we knew nothing about this disease.
“As a family we had very limited information.
“If we had been aware that life was going to be so short for my father I think we would have spent more time with him enjoying holidays and other activities as a family.
“I feel all patients and carers should be informed of the impact to their lives when diagnosed with IPF.
“This support group will offer hope and support to patients who can often feel isolated and will be a place where patients and carers can share their experiences.”
If you or a family member are interested in joining the group, or would just like to find out more please contact Helena Phelan, Western Trust Respiratory Nurse Specialist based at Altnagelvin Hospital, Londonderry on Tel: (028) 71611361 or email: [email protected].
