IT is expected to be the biggest and best Hallowe’en carnival party in the world tonight.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to take to the streets of Derry this evening for a spooktacular night to remember.
And for ex-pats living abroad they won’t miss out either.
For if you happen to be on the other side of the planet and can’t actually make it here tonight, you can still soak up the carnival atmosphere thanks to the wonders of the worldwide web.
Derry City and Strabane District Council has pulled out all the stops to ensure that no one misses out on the internationally famous festivities and this year’s ‘Rise Of The River Gods’ themed carnival will be live streamed on the Council’s website – www.derrystrabane.com/halloween – from 7pm-8pm..
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion, said she is delighted that tonight’s celebrations would reach an even wider global audience.
“I am thrilled that Council is providing a live stream on its website to capture all the atmosphere at the Rise of the River Gods carnival parade.
“Our annual carnival has gone from strength to strength and we were delighted when Derry was named the best Hallowe’en destination in the world in the recent USA Today poll.
“Thanks to Council’s live stream on October 31st, thousands of people in far flung destinations will still be able to be with us in spirit.
“The live stream will also enable those people in our own local communities who, due to mobility or health reasons, may not be able to come to the parade, to view it from the comfort of their own homes.
“We also anticipate considerable interest from the ex-pat community in watching the live stream.”
Karan Leonard, Council’s Festivals and Events Manager, said Council had trialled the use of live stream for this year’s St Patrick’s Day Carnival and was keen to expand the service.
She said: “We are anticipating this will be a very popular initiative for fans of the Derry Hallowe’en carnival parade who may not be able to join us this year.
“Through the use of live stream on Council’s website, we aim to make our celebrations as inclusive as possible so that everyone has an opportunity to be part of our world famous event, in venues across the world.”
The Rise Of The River Gods street carnival parade will depart from Queen’s Quay car park at 7 pm this evening, making its way across Boating Club Lane and up Strand Road towards Harbour Roundabout, before travelling down Queen’s Quay to the Council offices.
The Hallowe’en festivities, which will culminate with a massive Fireworks Finale on the River Foyle at 8 pm are expected to attract thousands of people, with accommodation in the city at full occupancy over the weekend.
