SHANTALLOW Community Centre is encouraging people living in the local area to take get involved in a wide range of activities and clubs held at the centre.
The popular community facility, owned and run by Derry City and Strabane District Council, has a wide range of activities for all age groups aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle and getting people out and about and meeting with one another.
Older persons are well catered for with the Northside 50+ Club, which encourages women over the age of 50 to come along and get involved in a range of fun activities and events.
The club aims to provide women in the area with the chance to meet new friends who share the same interests. The group meet every Monday from 10.30 am to 12.30pm. For more information contact, Mary McBrearty on 71 35 8787.
Every Thursday, the Shantallow Social and Luncheon Club meet for lunch and a chat from 12.30pn to 2pm while the Shantallow Women’s Group meet every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm to meet, talk and participate in various activities throughout the year.
Among the many fitness classes taking place at the Centre are weekly Zumba classes with local instructor Teresa, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 10.00. New members are always welcome and it costs only £1.50 per session.
The weekly weight watchers class takes place at 10 am every Thursday morning while the Community Gym, adjacent to the Centre, operates every Monday to Saturday , offering a number of facilities.
Kids are well catered for at the Centre with a range of activities such as Fusion Ju Jutsu for juniors every Tueday evening from 7.30 to 8.30pm, or Irish Dancing for both girls and boys with the Cullen School of Dancing every Monday4:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., Tuesday 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Thursday 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The Girls Gymnastics Club, which caters for girls between 6 and 16 years, runs from Monday to Wednesday and Friday from 4.30pm to 6pm and from 10.30 am to 12 noon on a Saturday.
On Saturday mornings the Centre hosts a multi sports club for kids aged between six and 10 from 10 am to 12 noon in an effort to encourage them to try out new sports and meet new friends.
Among the sports included in the programme is tag games, badminton, basketball and dodgeball, to name but a few. The perfect way to get kids active at the weekends!
The Centre also has facilities to house birthday parties for primary school aged children.
The Minor Hall is also available for hire as a small venue for conferences, meetings and events, while the Main Hall is available for bookings for 5-aside football, basketball etc. For more details contact the centre directly at 028 7137 6503.
