SOCIAL Development Minister Mervyn Storey has welcomed the completion of refurbishment work at Derry’s Tullyally Community Centre.
The Department for Social Development provided almost £200,000 for the refurbishment work at the Tullyally Community Centre which recently fell into a state of disrepair.
Derry City and Strabane District Council progressed the refurbishment of the Centre and contributed a further £20,000 to its repair, bringing the total investment to £218,656.
Minister Storey said: “The completion of the works at this Centre will greatly benefit all those who live in the area, and will provide a central hub for people to come together.
“Going forward, the Centre will provide a range of facilities including youth projects, educational opportunities, health and well-being projects.”
The completed work has brought the existing Tullyally Community Centre building back to a condition where essential community services can be delivered.
The pathway and green spaces surrounding the building have also been enhanced to ensure the best use of the space through additional paved areas and planting, generating a welcoming and community aspect for the site.
The Minister added: “On a recent visit to the city I was able to see at first hand the facilities available at Tullyally Community Centre and how the building has been transformed.
“A few years ago this was a derelict building which had been damaged by anti-social behaviour but it is now revitalised and will benefit both young and old in the community.”
Alison Wallace, Strategy Manager, Waterside Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership said: “Waterside Neighbourhood Partnership are delighted that Tullyally Community Centre is re-opening after major renovations as it will make a major impact on the range and quality of services that will be available to the residents in the Tullyally area.
“We would like to thank the Department for Social Development and Derry City and Strabane District Council for funding the renovation works, Inner City Trust for their continued support in managing the building and Tullyally Community Partnership for all their efforts to get the Centre re-opened.”
