SCHOOL children from 10 schools around the city took part in the planting of precinct planters that will be displayed along the quay at the Foyle Marina over the summer months.
It’s part of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Plants Ahoy Scheme that will form part of the Pride in our City/Community Initiative.
Among the schools taking part in the scheme are Ardnashee; St Anne’s; Newbuildings St Patrick’s, Pennyburn; The Fountain; Rosemount; Hollybush; Chapel Road; St Colmcille and Cumber Claudy.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Elisha McCallion speaking at the launch yesterday said the Plants Ahoy initiative was fun and innovative way of getting young people engaged in planting and encouraging them to take pride in their city and community.
“Derry City and Strabane District Council is delighted to be taking part in the Pride in our City/Community Initiative which strives to encourage communities to enhance their own areas and to take pride in where they live and work.
“We are delighted to have local schools involved in this project and very impressed with their creative designs and nautical themed stickers that have been used to decorate the sides of the planters,” she said.
Danny McCartney, Parks Maintenance and Cemeteries Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council said as well as aiming to foster civic pride among local communities, the project is very much about enhancing the green space and floral displays across the Council area.
He said key to the success of the project is the collaborative partnership between organisations and stakeholders across the Council area who are working together to improve the local environment and the quality of life for citizens.
He added: “The Plants Ahoy planters will be on display at locations along the riverfront over the summer months.
“It will be an integral part of our efforts to make the city colourful, clean and bright as we put ourselves forward for a series of civic and environmental competitions such as the NI Best Kept Awards, Co-operation Ireland Pride Of Place, Britain In Bloom, and Ulster In Bloom.”
