SDLP West Tyrone Westminster candidate Daniel McCrossan has questioned the Republican credentials of Sinn Fein Westminster candidates. At a hustings event last night Mr McCrossan criticised their abstentionist policy and described their ‘rhetoric’ as ‘flimsy and hypocritical’.
He said: “Last night the Sinn Fein West Tyrone candidate claimed that he is an “active abstentionist” and I along with many in this constituency can see that this policy is hypocritical and wearing thin in a constituency that is in desperate need of investment and effective representation.
“It would appear that the only way Mr Doherty is active in Westminster is by filling out his expenses forms claiming £515,378 between 2010 and 2014 from the taxpayer without casting a single vote.
“Sinn Fein are hanging onto this last flimsy piece of rhetoric as in their minds it gives them licence to call themselves Republicans. The public however are coming to realise that they are plastic Republicans who have surrendered any real ambition to do right by the people they are supposed to represent.
“They can make their ‘principled stand’ against the parliamentary oath but their hypocrisy is compounded by their participation in the Assembly where all laws passed require Royal assent.
“SDLP MPs will represent everyone in their constituencies and will strive to pick up the slack of those MPs who feel that doing their job is beneath them.”
