THE PSNI has unveiled the new police commanders for Derry and Strabane district.
The new district is part of changes to align policing districts in the North to the 11 new ‘super councils’ have come into effect.
The former Foyle and Strabane police areas now make up the new Derry City and Strabane District.
The main police stations in the District are at Strand Road, Strabane and Waterside.
Superintendent Mark McEwan is commander of the Derry City and Strabane District, which has traditionally been one of the busiest areas in Northern Ireland outside Belfast.
He said: “We have a large population centre in Derry-Londonderry and busy towns such as Strabane, as well as a rural hinterland with a number of smaller communities.
“Many of the major policing issues have been well documented in recent times.
“We are looking forward to retaining and strengthening the links we have with people, organisations and groups in the area. Our focus will remain on keeping communities safe, preventing crime and detecting criminals through Policing with the Community.
“My senior team has officers with long service and extensive experience in the area, and while they will have specific functional roles to play within policing locally, I am also keen we do not lose the direct community relationships that have been established and have worked so well under the ‘old’ system.”
