Sinn Féin Councillor Maolíosa Mc Hugh a second family in Sion Mills were victims of burglary on Sunday evening highlighting the need for people throughout the immediate and wider area to remain vigilant.
He said: “Sinn Fein been contacted by a family member of the victims of a of a second burglary which took place at Millhaven in Sion Mills on Sunday evening while they were out of their home. They arrived home to find it had been ransacked. As with the despicable burglary on the nearby home of pensioners Ivor and Winnie Lucas an amount of jewellery was stolen including a watch over 100 years old which originally belonged to a grandmother of one of the victims and which is of great sentimental value.
“Those who carried out these burglaries are heartless and care nothing for the trauma and fear that they have caused to their victims.
“News of this second burglary also points to a planned targeting of areas rather than the actions of an opportunistic thief. It is in line with an established pattern over recent times of different areas being targeted and particularly elderly people and people who are not at home.
“I would urge everyone in the immediate and indeed wider area to remain extra vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activity and hopefully this can assist in the apprehension of those involved in these and more than likely other burglaries in our area.”
