Derry SDLP Councillor Angela Dobbins has called for extra care on the roads during the “shcool run.”
Cllr Dobbins, a member of the Foyle Road Safety Committee, was speaking following the death of an eight-year-old boy after he was struck by a car alongside his mother and four siblings in a horror crash in Co Antrim this morning.
Adam Gilmour died after a car crashed into him and his family as they walked to get a school bus at Loughill Road in Cloughmills.
His mother and one of his siblings are in a stable condition in the Causeway and Antrim Area hospitals respectively.
An 18-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the vehicle involved, has been arrested in connection with the crash.
Offering her condolences to the Gilmour family, Cllr Dobbins urged those who either walk or transport their children to school to be “extra vigilant.”
She added: “These winter mornings are dark and I would ask that those travelling to schools wear high visibility clothing and in rural areas to walk with torches as street lighting does not exist.”
Cllr Dobbins concluded: “I would also ask that those driving in these dark mornings to use extreme caution, be weary of pedestrians and to above all reduce speed.”
