COUNTY Derry farmers are being offered cut-price tracking devices to protect machinery from thieves.
Sinn Féin Councillor Paul Fleming has called on farmers to take advantage of the initiative launched by Justice Minister David Ford that allows a discount on tracking devices attached to tractors.
Councillor Fleming said: “The cost of installing a tracking device on a tractor is now being subsidised for a period by the Department of Justice and I would call on farmers to take advantage of this offer while it lasts.
“If a vehicle is stolen that has a tracking device attached it is much easy to be recovered, identified and returned to its owner.
“For the cost of installing a tracking device it may save the farmer tens of thousands of pounds if his tractor is stolen and will save him increased insurance premiums at the very least.
“The pilot scheme proved very successful and I would urge farmers to call NFU Mutual on 028 90818688 before September 30th to register for the scheme.”
