Revellers in a Co Derry town caught “relieving” themselves in public have been given the unique opportunity to brush aside a possible criminal conviction.
Police in Limavady used discretion when they came upon anyone urinating in the street by giving them the chance of cleaning up their mess and avoiding a stressful court appearance.
Instead of automatically taking culprits to court on indecent exposure charges – usually ending up with a fine for first time offenders – police provided a drum with water/washing up liquid and a brush to “wipe their slate clean.”
The pilot scheme – operated over the Christmas and New Year period – allowed those “taking short” and found urinating in public the option to clean it up.
And if too drunk to do it at the time, officers arranged to meet them on another date to complete the job.
