Education Minister John O’Dowd has approved a development proposal to amalgamate St Anne’s Primary School and Barrack Street Boys’ Primary School in Strabane.
The announcement has been welcomed by SDLP election candidate Patrick Leonard.
He said: “As a father of two girls at St Anne’s, I welcome the news that the proposed amalgamation of St Anne’s Primary School and Barrack Street Boys’ Primary School in Strabane will take place.
“This amalgamation will provide a much needed co-educational primary school serving the Camus area of Strabane.”
Explaining the reasons for his decision, the Minister O’Dowd said the amalgamation would meet parental demand and ensure a broad, balanced curriculum in a viable and sustainable school.
He added: This proposal is considered to be the best solution for securing high quality education now and into the future.”
Mr O’Dowd concluded: “I would like to take this opportunity to wish the staff and pupils every success for the future.”
