A Sinn Fein councillor has called for anyone with information about the burning of a car in the Steelstown area of Derry to contact police.
It is understood the car was involved in the incident on Monday night in which a man was seriously injured when he was dragged and hit by another car while trying to stop raiders who had attempted to steal his lorry outside a wake.
Adrian McLaughlin (53), from Drum near Dungiven, who had attending the wake of his father-in-law James McDaid at Elaghbeg in Burnfoot in Inishowen.
The family of the father-of-six, sustained multiple injuries including two broken legs, pelvic and chest injuries, said he was lucky to be alive.
The incident occurred around 7.30pm on Monday and the car used by the culprits was later burned out in the Steelstown area of Derry.
Garda Superintendent McGovern said anyone with information about the incident should contact investigating officers at Buncrana Garda Station, telephone (00353) 74 932 0540.
Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan has condemned those responsible and appealed for anyone with information to contact police.
He said: “I would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Steelstown Road area in relation to this car getting set on fire to contact the police.”
